The document begins with a foreword that assets that sound nutrition is a basic human right while highlighting South Africa’s mix of both under and over- nutrition. The road map then moves to outline the many ways in which poor nutrition plays a role in South Africa’s health outcomes, including driving maternal and child deaths.

The strategy goes on to provide an overview of the challenges in implementing previous nutrition strategies before discussing the roadmap itself.

The roadmap lists a number of priority interventions, including:

  • Exclusive breastfeeding;
  • Healthy eating for optimal weight during pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  • Nutritional education;
  • Therapeutic zin, A, iron folate and calcium supplements; and
  • Micronutrient supplements for undernourished people, particularly those with HIV and TB
