The Limpopo Department of Health has issued a statement condemning criminal acts of distribution illegal drugs.

The doctor was arrested along with an accomplice during a police bust in Watervaal near Makhado earlier this month. The Limpopo Department of Health has issued a statement condemning criminal acts of distribution illegal drugs especially that seek to undermine their efforts to fight against drugs abuse.

Dr Mpho Lekalakala and his co-accused Vukosi Maluleke were apprehended following a tip off that led police to a house where they were found in possession of nine sachets of nyaope, four cocaine rocks, two pipes and dagga.

“Whilst we respect the notion of innocent until proven guilty, we are equality disappointed and disturbed by the prospect of a medical doctor possibly helping in the illegal distribution of illicit drugs,” read the Health Department’s statement.

“We remain resolute in our condemnation of any illegal acts; particularly that those seeking to undermine government’s efforts to fight against drug abuse.”

Lekalakala was released on R1 000 bail and the case was remanded to August 1 for further police investigations. Maluleke paid a R300 admission of guilt fine and was released.

The department said they will follow the case closely and provide any necessary assistance to the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the case proceeds switftly.

In another breakthrough police have arrested a 28 year old suspect in Lebowakgomo outside Polokwane for dealing with drugs and seized 297 rocks valued at R14 850. sachets of dagga with a street value R2220 and R3 000 in cash.

Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the tactical operations will continue as police combat drug dealing in the province. – Health-e News.
