Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza said: “This day must remind us where we come from and remind us of our responsibility to build a new future where all people will have access to these rights. Human rights must be guaranteed to all our people, young and old, as something we live with, rather than something that is enforced.  We must respect one another because one person’s rights are equally important as those of another.”

This day must remind us where we come from and remind us of our responsibility to build a new future where all people will have access to these rights.

Mpumalanga Sport and Recreation MEC Norah Mahlangu celebrated the day by handing out a stack of social relief items. These included ownership of RDP houses, wheel chairs, food parcels, sanitary towels to two schools, and a number of school uniforms and 40 sports kits to two local schools in the Mkhondo municipal area.

Community member Muzi Dlamini thanked the government leaders for all the gifts and for making Human Rights Day a memorable one.

He said many people in the Mkhondo area still felt like they were not being treated well, and their rights were violated by employers who denied them burial rights on local farms, and denied them permission to visit old grave sites.

“It’s really sad that after our mother and fathers fought for a free, democratic country some of us are still maltreated by white people,” said farm worker Sarah Zulu.
