Storm leaves scores homeless

According to Vhembe District Municipality Spokesperson Matodzi Ralushai, the municipality was liasing with ward counsellors as of earlier this week to try to figure out how many people had been left homeless by a storm that went from a summer shower to a powerful torrent in just minutes. The storm affected villages including Hamutsha, Tsianda, and Mutale near Thohoyandou.

It also damaged schools just as students like grade 12 pupil Ronewa Muhanganei prepared to write exams. Muhanganei and her family are now living in temporary accommodation.

“I was supposed to have been preparing for my history paper, but I can’t because all the books and previous question papers I have were blown away by the storm,” Muhanganei told OurHealth.

“The storm has left us without any food to eat,” said Lufuno Mudau. “Since Sunday we had to rely on hand outs from neighbours and relatives for food.”
