South African National HIV Prevalence, Incidence & Behaviour Survey, 2012
Launched on 1 April 2014, the report is the latest large HIV household survey from South Africa’s Human Sciences Research Council and follows earlier surveys in 2002, 2005 and 2009. The survey continues to show the heightened vulnerability of women in the country who begin to be at higher risk of contracting the virus as early as 15 years old.
In fact, HIV prevalence rates among women aged 15 to 24 are five times those of their male peers. Interestingly, the survey found that by mid-2012, 2 million people living with HIV showed signs of having taken antiretrovirals (ARVs).
Official estimates often cite figures of 2.4 million people currently enrolled in the country’s ARV programme.
Finally, the report also notes continued declines in new HIV cases among young people as well as declines in new infections among young women in particular.

Many questions regarding validity of this types of surveys. There is a significant discrepancy between world heath statistics and the south African statistics. We can’t accept any statistics at face value if the discrepancy is not addressed. Further more the relationship between the various statistics like population growth, people entering the country, babies born, death statistics, HIV infections needs to be explained. Currently their is no relationship between these statistics. I think that it would be best not to publish localized statistics.
